  19. Steve Hutchinson in which he recommends  Ian's "excellent, clear 
  20. instructions . . . I thoroughly recommend them . . . it may be worth 
  21. adding for Pocket FS users that pocket FS appears much more robust - 
  22. and allows psion 3A users to go at 19200 baud!" - GLF]"

  24. The notes in this directory are written in response to a call for help 
  25. from Steve Hutchinson in the February 1994 PipeLine file 
  26. [4PL9402.$.Help.ReadMe].  Apparently Steve is having problems 
  27. transferring PipeDream files to and from his Acorn Pocketbook.  He uses 
  28. the Lotus-123 PipeDream converter.  He says "Transfer in either 
  29. direction causes problems.  Going from PipeDream to Pocketbook leads to 
  30. continual recalculation in the pocketbook.  Going the other way doesn't 
  31. transfer the formulae correctly. . . ." 
  32.  
  33. Initially I had the same problems; the first time I suffered from 
  34. continual recalculation I had a minor panic, I thought I was going to 
  35. have to reset my Psion and lose all my data.  Fortunately I avoided 
  36. that, and having carefully re-read the Psion Spreadsheet User Guide I 
  37. realised that the information in the User Guide is accurate, if too 
  38. brief and difficult to follow, whereas the Pocket Book A-Link guide is 
  39. wrong.

  41. The notes in the file [PD>PsionSS] were written to explain in greater 
  42. detail what is going on, and what to do when transferring a spreadsheet 
  43. file from PipeDream to Psion.  
  44.  
  45. Once you are confident you may prefer to use the associated brief 
  46. notes, [PD>PsSS].
  47.  
  48. I also had problems transferring from Psion Spreadsheet to PipeDream at 
  49. first.  This is because I naïvely believed it would be sufficient to 
  50. drag the Psion Spreadsheet file from the PocketFS conversion window to 
  51. a suitable directory before loading into PipeDream.  When you do that 
  52. PocketFS produces a CSV file by default which will happily load into 
  53. PipeDream, but as Steve notes it does not transfer the formulae 
  54. correctly.  In fact it does not transfer the formulae at all; it 
  55. transfers the 'value' of a cell, not the 'contents'.  I should have 
  56. realised that; that is what happens when you export a CSV file from any 
  57. spreadsheet - try saving a CSV file from a PipeDream spreadsheet and 
  58. then reload it.

  60. The Pocket Book A-Link guide suggests that PocketFS converts between 
  61. Abacus (Psion Spreadsheet) file format and CSV, TSV or WK1 file 
  62. formats.  It rightly points out that CSV files do not support 
  63. equations, and that WK1 files (Lotus 123 version 2 onwards) have an 
  64. advantage over CSV/TSV in that equations are supported.  However, it 
  65. wrongly states that Lotus WK1 files with a DOS file type may be dragged 
  66. directly from a DOS floppy disc or partition into the conversion 
  67. window: if you try that you will suffer the continual recalculation 
  68. Steve Hutchinson complained about.
  69.  
  70. Whilst the A-Link guide does not make a similar direct instruction 
  71. about conversion in the other direction, it describes how to set the 
  72. conversion format, one of which is WK1, which implies that it should 
  73. work.  Unfortunately, whilst the conversion to WK1 format seems to go 
  74. well, with a red Lotus WK1 (db0) file icon appearing in the destination 
  75. directory, you will find that the file is empty!
  76.  
  77. Thus I have concluded that it is not possible to use the A-Link 
  78. conversion window to convert files in either direction between 
  79. PipeDream and the Psion spreadsheet.
  80.  
  81. However, I have successfully transferred files many times in both 
  82. directions between a DOS floppy disc and the Psion M directory, 
  83. sub-directory SPR, and used the Psion spreadsheet to convert between 
  84. the WK1 (or WKS) Lotus file format to the Abacus spr file format.

  86. The information in the Psion Spreadsheet User Guide on file transfer to 
  87. other programs is brief, and you may miss the significance of the 
  88. comment that it is "best to save files as SPR until the moment you want 
  89. to export them, and only then save them as WKS or WK1."  To export 
  90. files you have to use 'Save as' and set the file type to WKS or WK1 
  91. which you can then copy to a suitable directory before using PD123 to 
  92. complete the conversion.

  95. detail what is going on, and what to do when transferring a spreadsheet 
  96. file from Psion to PipeDream.

  101. I have a Psion Series 3 with the Spreadsheet SSD plugged into one 
  102. of the SSD drives, but I believe the notes I give here are equally 
  103. applicable to the Acorn PocketBook: I refer to both machines as 
  104. Psion.  Since Acorn have dropped the name Archimedes, and with the 
  105. advent of the RiscPC, I have used the name ARM, Acorn RISC Machine 
  106. to cover all members of the family.
